2019 OHL Gold Cup Recap

This past weekend seven Steelheads prospects from the 2019 OHL Priority Selection participated in the OHL Gold Cup. The event, held in Kitchener, Ontario, featured 160 players, showcasing top under-16 talent. As part of the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence (POE), players competing at the OHL Gold Cup had an opportunity to be evaluated for an invitation to the national under-17 development camp. Players participating and drafted by the Steelheads organization included Ethan Del Mastro (1st Round), Luca Del Bel Belluz (3rd Round), Chas Sharpe (3rd Round), Josh Reid (3rd Round), Adam O’Marra (6th Round), Justin Dilauro (7th Round) and Sean Mateer (14th Round).

In addition to development opportunities, players competed in three pool games and one crossover game on the final day. At the completion of round robin play fellow Steelheads draft picks Ethan Del Mastro (representing GTHL Blue) and Luca Del Bel Belluz (representing GTHL Red) faced off against each other in the gold medal game to determine the OHL Gold Cup champion.

The championship game looked to be one-sided as GTHL Red jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period with goals coming from Alex Christopoulos and Paul Christopoulos. Early in the second period, Marc Boudreau would pad that lead with an unassisted tally, putting GTHL Red up 3-0. Showing no signs of going down easy, GTHL Blue came storming back with three straight goals of their own from Oliver Smith, Tucker Robertson and Aidan Shepard. The lead was once again regained as Brandt Clarke made it 4-3 for GTHL Red on a goal in which Luca Del Bel Belluz registered the secondary assist. The third period belonged to Ethan Del Mastro and GTHL Blue as Braeden Kressler tied the game at the mid-way point of the frame and Pasquale Zito would ice the game winner. GTHL Blue would repeat as champions taking the final by a score of 5-4.

The Mississauga Steelheads had all around great performances from their seven prospects:
