MISSISSAUGA, ON — The Steelheads welcomed the Erie Otters to the Hershey Centre for a Thanksgiving Day matinee. The game was a match up between two ‘Exceptional” players, Otters’ Connor McDavid, who received Exceptional status in 2012 and the Steelheads’ Sean Day who received Exceptional status prior to the 2013-2014 season. With all eyes on Day and McDavid, it was the Otters who struck first, as Dane Fox potted his 8th goal of the season 31 seconds into the game to put the Otters up 1-0; assists went to Connor Brown and Connor McDavid. The Otters would capitalize again on the man advantage as Fox scored his 2nd of the game, beating a screened Spencer Martin to put the Otters up 2-0. With two Otters in the box, the Steelheads had a number of great chances on the two man advantage but were unable to solve Otters goalie, Oscar Dansk. The Steelheads closed the period strong but were unable to beat Dansk and the score remained 2-0 heading into the first intermission with the shots on goal 11-8 in their favour.
Like the first period, the Otters got on the scoreboard early in the second, with Stephen Harper jumping on a rebound to beat Martin for the Otters third goal of the game. Seconds later, the Otters increased their lead to 4-0 as Joel Wigle scored an unassisted goal, his first of the season. Connor McDavid capped off a strong period for the Otters, scoring his 4th goal of the season at 14:13, beating Steelheads goalie Dawson Carty, who replaced Spencer Martin. Shots on goal after the second were 21-14 in favour of Erie.
Unfortunately for the Steelheads, the third period was much the same as the first two. Jake Evans and Nick Betz added goals for the Otters as they downed the Steelheads 7-0.
The Steelheads are back in action this week with two road games, first visiting the Peterborough Petes on Thursday, and then heading toSudburyfor a Saturday night showdown with the Wolves.
