The Steelheads kicked off a three game road trip Thursday night with a visit to Barrie to take on their central division rivals. Having won their previous six games, the Steelheads looked to extend their win streak to seven straight games, while the Colts looked to snap a two-game losing skid.
The goalies were the story tonight as each came out with a number of big saves to keep their team in it. The home team came out hot in the opening frame, outshooting the Steelheads 17-9. Zachary Magwood opened the scoring at 7:30 of the first from Tyler Tucker and Jason Smith, picking up a loose puck that Ingham thought he had possession of. Past the midway mark of the period, the Steelheads evened the score as Ryan McLeod found Trent Fox in front of the Colts’ goal, and Fox made no mistake beating Propp blocker side. The score stayed even at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.
Early in the second, Stefan LeBlanc sent Michael McLeod on a breakaway, but the was robbed by Propp. A pair of penalties were given to each side, but neither team could capitalize on the man-advantage, as the game remained tied at 1-1 heading into the final frame.
At 9:51 of the final frame, former Steelhead forward, Jason Smith restored the Colts’ lead, showing great patience to beat out Ingham. The Steelheads responded with two unanswered goals, the first from leading scorer, Owen Tippett. Stefan LeBlanc found Tippett in the high slot where he sent a beautiful wrist shot over Propp’s shoulder. The second Steelheads goal, and eventual game winner, came from Spencer Watson who fired a shot past Propp from just inside the blue line. Stephen Gibson and Michael McLeod picked up the assists on Watson’s 26th of the season.
The Steelheads will visit the Kingston Frontenacs tomorrow for a 7PM start. Catch the action live on Rogers TV cable 10 in Mississauga.
