Watson scores 300th career point & Tippett ties franchise record in 6-1 win

With the OHL playoffs quickly approaching, the Mississauga Steelheads and the Niagara IceDogs knew that their Sunday afternoon match-up was going to have a playoff atmosphere. The Steelheads could play spoiler to the IceDogs with a win. The IceDogs needed one point to secure their spot in the playoffs.

At the start of the first, the Steelheads came out flying, scoring two goals from Matt Titus and Trent Fox to take an early 2-0 lead. Both teams were not afraid to make big hits. The Steelheads and the IceDogs continued to exchange hard shots and heavy hits all game. After 20 minutes, the Steelheads would head to the dressing room with a 2-0 lead.

The second period was more of the same hard hitting hockey. The Steelheads took a total of nine penalties throughout the game, including a 5 on 3 opportunity in the second period. Jacob Ingham made some huge saves for the Steelheads, to keep the score 2-0 after two frames.

Similar to the first period, the Steelheads scored a couple of early goals from Michael McLeod and Stefan LeBlanc to boost their lead to 4-0. Later in the period, Spencer Watson scored the fifth goal of the game, recording his 300th career point in the OHL.  Six minutes later, Nathan Bastian scored on the power play, assisted by Ryan McLeod and Owen Tippett. Tippett’s assist tied him with Alex Nylander for the Steelheads franchise record for most points in a single regular season with 75. Pavel Demin for the IceDogs gets a goal late but it will not make a difference. The Steelheads closed out the game with a 6-1 victory!

Tune in on Tuesday for the Steelheads final regular season game when they face-off against the Sudbury Wolves. Puck drops at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga at 7pm!
