Isaacson’s Hat Trick Lifts Steelheads Past IceDogs

St. Catharines, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads travelled to St. Catharines to take on the Niagara IceDogs on Saturday night.

Nick Isaacson opened the scoring for Mississauga, with a beautiful individual effort on the penalty kill, taking the puck from end to end and firing a shot past Tucker Tynan. The teams would trade penalties back and forth throughout the rest of the period, but the only goal would come from Isaacson’s shorthanded marker. The Steelheads headed to the intermission ahead 1-0 and outshooting Niagara 12-10.

James Hardie had a prime scoring chance midway through the second period, receiving a cross crease pass on a 3-on-2 from Richard Whittaker, but was turned aside by Tynan. The IceDogs tied the game off a neutral zone giveaway, with Kyen Sopa one-timing a slapshot on an odd-man rush off a feed from Akil Thomas. Calvin Martin recorded his first point in the blue and white, as he found Nick Isaacson open in front of the net to put the Fish up 2-1. The Steelheads headed into the third period with the lead, with Kai Edmonds stopping 22/23 shots on goal through the first 40 minutes of play (.957 SV%).

The Fish came out strong to start the third period, recording multiple scoring chances on the rush off the opening faceoff. Kai Edmonds continued his strong play, stopping Thomas on a breakaway to maintain the Steelheads lead. Thomas Harley took control of the play, picking up the puck in the neutral zone and wiring a shot past Tynan to make the score 3-1. With the IceDogs net empty, the Steelheads lead was cut to one as Lucas Theriault skated into the slot and beat Edmonds up high. Isaacson scored an empty netter to record the hat-trick and seal the victory for the Steelheads by a final score of 4-2.

Two Steelheads set single game career highs, as Nick Isaacson recorded 4 points (3G, 1A) and Duncan Penman registered 6 shots on goal. Kai Edmonds played one of his best games of the season, stopping 36/38 shots on goal (.947 SV%).

Following the game, Nick Isaacson spoke about the victory β€œIt feels awesome. We’ve been outscored the past few games, a bit of a slow start, it’s good to finish off the weekend with a win.”
