Steelheads’ rookie Cole Schwindt may be new to the team, but he is already fitting in on and off the ice. We sat down with Cole to discuss what a typical practice is like, and discovered what some of his favourite drills are at practice.
What is the team’s favourite drill?
We do a lot of great drills each day, and I think each guy probably has their own favourite. If I had to guess, I think team really enjoys the five puck shootout, it gets the team excited and it’s a lot of fun Our coaches do a good job of keeping practice engaging, so there are a few we can choose from.
What is your favourite drill?
I think I like the warmup drills like the three-pass drill (where three players rush and pass the puck between them) Not only does it allow us to get our legs moving and have a few shots on net, but it also gets the goalie warmed up.
Which drill improves your skating the most?
I think the ‘fun drill’ improves my skating the most. You have 45 seconds to skate down the ice and back. It’s not really fun for us, but it’s fun for the coaches to watch us. Making sure that we’re working our legs and working on our cardio throughout the season helps as well.
What is your favourite part of practice?
Just being with the fellas. We’re a team here and everybody’s pretty close, so just being on the ice together is pretty fun. At the end of practice, we’ll all stay on the ice a bit longer to work on stuff and be with each other which is pretty fun.
