Steelheads Add Two Swiss Players in 2022 CHL Import Draft

MISSISSAUGA, ON – For the first time since 2019, the Mississauga Steelheads selected two players in the CHL Import Draft this Canada Day.

For their first selection, the Steelheads drafted goaltender Alessio Beglieri with the original 38th overall pick. The 5’11” netminder from Biel-Bienne, Switzerland played for Biel-Bienne U20 this past season, with a 2.13 goals against average in 21 games. Beglieri also represented Team Switzerland in the 2022 U18 World Junior Championships.

General Manager and Head Coach James Richmond commented on the latest addition to the Steelheads goaltending. “We are pleased to select Alessio Beglieri in the 1st round of the 2022 CHL Import Draft. He has a lot of experience playing with men and on the international stage. He’s a goalie that competes and gives his team a chance to win every game. We would like to welcome Alessio and his family to the Steelheads.”

The next selection in the draft went to another Swiss player, forward Valdemar Hull from Fribourg, Switzerland. The original 98th overall pick scored 7 points (6G, 1A) in 19 games with Gottéron U20 this season. He also represented Team Switzerland at both the U17 and U18 levels. Standing at 6’2”, 190lb, Hull brings size and strength to the Steelheads offensive lineup.

James Richmond spoke about the second round selection. “Valdemar is a big fast forward that plays a complete game up and down the ice. I’m positive a lot of NHL teams will be excited to see him when they come to Mississauaga this year. We would like to welcome Valdemar and his family to the Steelheads.”

The most recent Steelheads selection in the CHL Import Draft was defenceman Kasper Larsen from Denmark in 2020. The Rodovre native went on to score 43 points (8G, 35A) in 57 games during the 2021-22 season.

The last time the Trout selected two players in the Import Draft included defenceman Ole Bjorgvik-Holm, who played two seasons with the Mississauga Steelheads. The Norwegian was drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 5th round in the 2020 NHL Draft and was an assistant captain for the team in the 2021-22 season. This also marks the first time the Steelheads have drafted a Swiss born player in the CHL Import Draft.
