Mississauga, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads took on the Guelph Storm in their annual School Day Game on Wednesday morning.
The first period was a tightly contested battle, as both teams worked hard to score the games first goal. The Steelheads were called for holding midway through the frame but were able to kill the penalty. Pavel Gogolev found himself all alone on a breakaway, but he was stopped on a big save by Kai Edmonds. Cole Schwindt made a nice toe-drag to get around Guelph’s defence on a 2-on-1, but just missed the net. At the end of the first period, the teams were tied at zero.
Edmonds stood tall in the second period, as he made multiple key saves to keep the Steelheads in the game. Guelph opened the scoring, as Matthew Papais grabbed the puck off a faceoff and was able to sneak one from the goal line through the arms of Edmonds. The Steelheads headed into the second intermission trailing by a goal, but outshot Guelph 13-12 in the period.
With the Steelheads in the penalty box, the Storm increased their lead to two goals as Daniil Chayka took a shot from the point that found its way past Edmonds. Mississauga had an opportunity to cut into the lead, as Guelph headed to the penalty box for slashing, but were unable to score. The School Day crowd was in a frenzy as fans frantically cheered on the Steelheads to mount a comeback in the game. Richard Whittaker was able to light the lamp as he jammed home a rebound past Owen Bennett, which cut the score to 2-1. Mississauga poured on the offense registering 17 shots on goal in the period, but an empty net goal from Guelph made the score final as the Steelheads fell 3-1.
